| Introduction | I have been exploring past generations, both my own and my wife's, for many years. I now realize that this process could continue endlessly. That said, it is time to begin recording the family's past while I am still able to do so. My primary goal will be to focus, not on everyone in the data base, but selectively—to concentrate on those individuals who in some way have defined the family. I have discerned that we are connected to our forbears in multiple ways, not simply via procreation or the steadfast human genome, but also via multi-generational memories that can only be explained by the developing science of epigenetics. In the end, we are fusions of nature and nurture. It is my hope and expectation to honor both realms—first according to the genetic record itself, and secondly, to speculate a bit about how genes are expressed, i.e., how certain behaviors have been passed on that are not DNA mutations but actual additions to the genome.
