About me

Introduction Michelle Darling - I was born in 1963 in Lusaka Zambia, and am a ceramic artist and sculptor at heart...most of the time.. but very often also a painter , mosaicist and collage artist. I spent my early childhood in Northern Rhodesia (now Zambia), and later in South Africa, and am a past pupil of the National School of the Arts in Johannesburg where I first studied sculpture and ceramics under the tutorlage of Mike Muller and John Burchard. From 1993 to 2000 I ran my ceramics studio and shop with my husband in Simon's Town in the Western Cape, South Africa, where most of my work was sold to international buyers. In 2001 I moved with my husband and two children to Germany, where we live and work in a 200 year old historical 'Fachwerk' house, on the edge of the beautiful Black Forest area of Baden Wurttemberg. Here I have re-established my art studio producing my colourful range of functional and decorative art. Although my style is not essentially 'African' art, one cannot help being influenced and inspired by the country, the people and places that formed you into the person that you are.
