Introduction A hammock enthusiast, tea-drinker and perpetual furniture rearranger, I am also a writer and journalist. When I was in high school, I worked for a small community newspaper—The Bullard Banner in Bullard, Texas. It was a tiny paper – on busy days, it was the editor-in-chief, the sports editor, and me. I spent many sunny afternoons in the East Texas countryside, hearing life stories from many different walks of life. One of the summers I worked for the Banner, I wrote a letter to a senior editor for the Texas Living Section at Southern Living. I sent him a story I had been working on and was pleasantly surprised to find his reply waiting for me in my mailbox a few weeks later. In a letter from his typewriter—one East Texan to another, he said—he gave me some of the best journalism advice. He reminded me that there is always a story to tell, if you look for it. I never forgot his kind words and his encouragement to keep writing. Four years later, I graduated from college as a journalist and I find myself here. Chasing another story—this time, my own.
Interests writer. journalist, story-teller. all of the above. There is nothing more thrilling to me than the moment the right words fall marching into line, as the breeze ruffles the pages of my notebook. I have had conversations (where all my good stories seem to begin) on many a porch, overlooking endless Texas fields and driving along the highway, constructing stories in my head and watching for bluebonnets. I loved my experience with East Texas journalism, and though I now find myself in a bigger city more interesting and dreamier than I could have ever imagined, I am still reminded that where you come from tells many stories - sometimes, the best ones.
