Introduction | Founded in September, 2001, Poor Players began broke and in brash fashion with a young, energetic and politically charged production of Titus Andronicus. The choices were as risky as the material and the show set a precedent that would guide Poor Players's style for years to come. This burgeoning theatre company has sought to remove Shakespeare's texts from their detached locale in history and offer them up afresh as living, resonant narratives that that reveal as much of the contradictions and extremities of human nature in contemporary society as they had during the Renaissance. Poor Players has always been committed to allowing the texts themselves to speak, while also ensuring that they speak in a direct, immediate and intimate manner to a contemporary audience. |
