| Introduction | I am the son of a sharecropper. Actually, my grandfather was one. Like most Black people, I was raised a solid Democrat. In college, I was a militant liberal. I marched against apartheid, any racial slight, any Republican. Like many Blacks who changed over the years, I began to question the long-held tenants of the Democrats. One time, a white co-worker asked me why was a Democrat, when I was so intelligent and a great thinker. I think I mumbled something about civil rights, but deep down I could not really answer him. I began to read conservative authors, and when Tony Brown, a favorite of mine, announced that he was joining the Republican Party, it hit me with a ton of bricks. His rationale was sound, not full of emotion and fury. I realized the value of smaller government, lower taxes, and a moral constitution. In a lot of ways, the Democrats left me. As I got older, moral values became important to me. As I made more money, taxes became important to me. As I seek to start my own business, excessive regulation has become important to me. I wish I had some dramatic epiphany to tell you, but that is why I have become a conservative |
