| Introduction | I began actively pursuing my interest in art in graduate school at NYU--first focused on visual art, as a photographer and then as an early explorer in video art. My creative drive then found voice in a career as an independent toy and game inventor. I've created and licensed all types of toys and games, the most well-known of which is Tickle Me Elmo. About 12 years ago I started making art again. Initially this explored mixed-media and sculpture (2005 to 2008) then various types of image projects embodied in a series of art books (2009-2013), followed by a return to video and animation and other time-based work (2014-present) I see myself as a conceptual visual artist. My work is guided by some simple basics. Make something interesting and playful, and find a way to express its beauty. The work is at the intersection of culture and pop culture, of fine art and fun art. It uses digital image making and taps into the internet as a source for content which explores narrative, text, visual humor, and an experimental mix of visual styles (mashup/mixups/mélanges). I often work in series, experimenting with reconfigurable, transformational, modular, and interactive art. |
