If you're speeding toward the sun in a doomed spaceship, and the flight attendant comes and asks if you'd care for anything on the flight, do you ask for a bag of peanuts, knowing that you're allergic to them, or do you ask for Champagne knowing that the bubbles tickle your nose and make you giggle, thus wrecking the solemnity of the journey?
