Introduction	It was not until I had my first, and only child at 50, that I found that I had time to start my family history research. Some time into the project I found that my paternal grandmother, a Smitherman from Kent was married to a Smitheman descendent from the West Midlands. I registered the names, plus several spelling variants, with the Guild of One Name Studies and started seriously recording all instances of the name.
