Introduction Phillip Goddard was born and raised in Barbados. Upon leaving the Lodge School he joined the US Marines, serving in the Vietnam War as a helicopter pilot. Returning to Barbados in 1971 he worked with his family firm J.N. Goddard and Sons. Assuming responsibility for the company's airline catering business he laid the groundwork for its expansion into a regional enterprise that now operates in the Caribbean and Central and South America. He became politically active in the 1980's running for office twice. As an appointed senator he served in various ministerial posts and as a special envoy under three terms of the Owen Arthur led BLP administration. Today he is retired and writes on issues pertaining to Barbados and the wider Caribbean.
