Introduction Now that photographic representation has become a main venue to perceive ourselves; when individual moments are substituted by reenactments of collective fantasies, I explore the possibility or the impossibility of finding an authentic self through photography. As a woman, my journey has to involve the feminine body. For if what we perceive as masculine can be represented by a large number of attributes related to action (the warrior, the businessman, the poet, the intelectual, God...), the only attribute ascribed to femininity is the body - for it's looks, for it's ability to give birth. Trough performance and photography, I take action and try to reach beyond the layers of fantasy and traditional gender play. Adopting both the roles of the photographer and the model, I recreate and then deconstruct the formula, the resulting imagery being often grotesque: a woman disguised as a woman in a crumbling mansion in Angie, a nude woman imitating her own gestures and then observing the empty space where she posed in Nobody’s Coming, or silicon breast implants laid graciously on a velvet sofa in Jellyfish, a moment before they fulfill their purpose as substitutes for the real thing.
