Introductioncomposer, poet, critic, essayist
InterestsStudied at: Guildhall School of Music and Drama, University of York (music 1st Class hons). I have performed at international level as a guitarist, percussionist and narrator specialising in 20th Century and contemporary music (with Icebreaker, Lontano, Gemini, Jane Manning's Minstrels, Northern Music Theatre, Innererklang etc at major venues and festivals in the UK and abroad) and now work mainly as a composer and writer. My music has been performed by PM Ensemble, Chamber Domaine, the Bridge Duo and pianists Llŷr Williams and Xenia Pestova among others, and I was Caerphilly composer-in-residence for 18 months. As well as reviews for a number of publications, I have had polemical essays and poetry published by Planet Magazine, the New Left Project, the Lonely Crowd, Cannon's Mouth, the Journal, Poetry Cornwall, Ink Sweat and Tears and Poetry Wales. I founded and edited the Composers of Wales Quarterly and am a regular critic/essayist for Tempo as well as an Editor of Wales Arts Review. I'm an opera and classical music critic/journalist for The Independent / i, The Stage, Opera Magazine and BBC Music Magazine as well as an examiner for Trinity College of Music and an opera judge for the Wales Theatre Awards. I write CD liner notes for NMC Records, and have written two chapters on composer Simon Holt for a forthcoming book on his music, to be published by Boydell in 2017. You can sometimes see/hear me holding forth on BBC Wales television and radio.
