| Introduction | I was taught by my parents to always be prepared, think clearly in a crisis, and be ready for anything. I survived the Tornado of 1975, and I remember when I was just a kid at Camp Fire Girl's Camp. For a week, we camped out in tents on wooden platforms. One night a strong storm was brewing. I gathered up everything I had and secured it tightly in my suitcase and tucked it under the cot as the wind ripped our tent to shreds. We were taken through the pouring rain to a building to spend the night. In the morning we returned to our tent, to help everybody else search for their belongings, hanging from trees in the ravine, etc. Afterwards I sat on my bed and opened my suitcase to get out clean, dry clothes and my dry camera. I know I am just talking about a kid at camp, but the same preparedness is vital in your home to survive any disaster. My family also belonged to a Church group that went camping almost weekly. It was a great lesson in survival! And yes, I do know how to clean a fish and build a blazing camp fire! Very useful skills in survival 101. |
