Introduction So what is bushcraft? To quote Ray Mears, it is "The practical knowledge of the natural world that we can carry with us in our minds and muscles. But it is about much more then just survival. Bushcraft is a treasure trove of wisdom, that enables us to feel a real kinship with the landscape." Where I live, in southern Minnesota, the "aboriginal minnesotans" 12,000 years ago, made their way across the landscape, near the edge of the last glacier, hunting and gathering as a culture, and of course using the ways of bushcraft. The village sites in the area I have had the privilege to explore, have yielded stone tools and pottery shards, and given me a mystery I wish to unravel. By studying both aboriginal bushcraft and modern ways of bushcraft I hope to find that kind of "kinship" with the landscape in a modern age. I welcome your comments as we share our experiences about both aboriginal and modern bushcraft, blending the past with the future, and getting that practical knowledge of the natural world into our minds and muscles. Happy exploring my friends.
