IntroductionAnindya Mukherjee seeks to fill blanks on the map in more ways than one. His penchant for exploration perhaps could hardly thrive with a different occupation, although being an active mountaineer simply puts no restraints on his avenues, nor does it constrict his domain of enquiry and curiosity. True to this broader pursuit for blanks on the map, he has stepped into unknown glaciers, followed the myths of an elusive hominid, facilitating anthropological study with evidence for possibly a new species. While having raced in a contest of speed on Elbrus, he has chased a fictional character’s trail from Mombasa to the Mountains of the Moon in Uganda. He has spanned the Western frontier of the Sahara on a bicycle in 2017; rode across five African countries from the Indian Ocean to the Atlantic in 2012. In 2015, he had been the first to document an unknown mountain range in the Yunnan province of China. Recently (2019), he retraced the trail of the Azad Hind Fauj, from Singapore to Manipur, India, in an attempt to revisit and rediscover a forgotten and often misunderstood chapter of India’s struggle for independence.
