Introduction I'm a twenty-something that grew up in a fundamental Christian home/community and escaped to the evil big city, where I was reverse brainwashed. I got my Master's degree and, after a brief stint working as a secretary at a Baptist camp (yes, it was humiliating), I somehow ended up drinking beer with rabbis and teaching the tribe at a Jewish school. I blog to try to figure out exactly how I get myself into these positions...oh, and to exploit. Umm, yeah, and one more thing: artistic license. Tan tan!
Interests skinnydipping, bad dancing, black fingernails, rhetoric, mutual understanding and pacifism, making fun of myself, buzz words, scandalization, flying under the radar, osos y buhos, patchouli, Ira Glass and his program This American Life, political satire, pretending I do yoga, camping and hiking
Favorite Movies NOT horror, yes to foreign and indie, NOT slapstick comedy, yes to satire and inappropriateness. My favorite movies are quirky and don't make me want to kill myself after I watch them. I like things that play with the mind a bit, too. Some examples are: Everything is Illuminated, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, anything done by Almodovar, Dot the I, Memento, Amelie, etc.
Favorite Music hipster white kid music (including Afro-Brazilian/Latino drums, The Shins, Bon Iver, Rilo Kiley, The Weepies, The Format, Iron and Wine, The Tallest Man on Earth), gangster rap (Tupac!), Counting Crows, reggaeton (the dirtier the better), Femi menstruating songbirds of numerous nationalities (Bebe, Feist, Regina Spektor, Shakira), Texas/old school country, electronic/electro-pop (Yelle, Parov Stelar, Belanova, The Postal Service, Julieta Venegas)
Favorite Books geeky theory (race theory, border/immigration policy, anything about social movements), books detailing lurid sexual encounters (Chelsea Handler), Old English Farts (esp. Charles Dickens), Chicanas esp. Sandra Cisneros (!), Hafiz, Bill Bryson (!), David Sedaris, again pretty much anything that makes me laugh and if it makes me think so much the better, NOT Nicholas Sparks, NOT mystery
