| Introduction | The Reader's Digest Reading Division, based in Pleasantville, N.Y., started in 1950 with Condensed Books, an offshoot of the popular book section of Reader’s Digest magazine. In 1997 the name of Condensed Books was changed to Select Editions to emphasize the editorial selection aspect of the series—only 24 great stories get selected each year. Three years later a parallel softcover edition of the classic series was launched. |
