| Introduction | A city dweller most of my life, I bought my first house in the New Jersey suburbs in July 2011. As a new construction, the land around the house is pretty much a blank slate. There is an ugly tree in the front yard, a few foundation plantings that the builder put in, and a small backyard shaded by large trees in the summer. All winter I have been thinking about and researching how to turn this somewhat pathetic wasteland into a beautiful, fertile, lush oasis of tranquility and productivity (read pretty plants and flowers and yummy veggies). I have no idea what I'm doing, so I'm researching everything I can find on the subject. I'm very nervous about making a mistake. |
