Introduction As a composer, and somebody with an interest in how films are made, I find that I tend to verbalise lots of opinions on movies, a lot of the time (for the joy it brings my filmgoing friends, of course...).
One thing I’ve noticed among healthy audiences is that they find it hard to discern good music from bad in films, unlike their visual effects, acting and even sound design. While opinion must somewhat come into play, I think it must be possible for all those that aren’t filmmakers to see the differences in good and bad music like the difference between Tom Hanks and Keanu Reeves: respectively.

It is with that notion in mind that I shall throw you the key to my innermost cognitions, complete with all machinations of bias and passion, to try and present to you a viewpoint on film music so that one day you’ll be watching Pirates of the Caribbean wondering where Russell Crowe has run off to.
