| Introduction | Kristin Pinyan has a PhD in medieval history specializing in the social and gender dynamics of the English gentry during the fifteenth century. Dr. Pinyan has taught courses covering European, American, and world history from the beginning of time up the present day at the high school and college levels. The past is all around us - sometimes hidden under layers of present-day civilization, other times sitting in plain sight just waiting to be noticed. It underlies and shapes our lives, our thoughts, and our actions in ways we often overlook. The Roman orator Cicero said that "history is life's teacher."
