| Introduction | I was medically retired from the U.S. Navy in 1988 due to a shipboard accident that tore up my back and neck. I was introduced to Amateur Radio at the ripe old age of 51. I had had a very nice woodworking shop in my garage, but had to give it up due to a lack of feeling in my hands and legs. That was when a friend introduced me to ham radio, I was hooked right then and there. I ordered the book needed to take the technician test and a month later I was on the local repeaters, simplex, and VHF side band. It took another 8 years until I was off of pain killers for long enough to figure out what I was reading and passed the General test. I have enjoyed this hobby and try to give back to all of the new folks and also the County I live in. I do believe that ham radio has saved my life. I was very desperate to do something, but unable to due to my disabilities. I will tell you this, it was fun to be able to talk with others around the area who were close and visited often. The repeaters were in use 24 hours a day 7 days a week at that point. Now? Not so much, but still fun. |
