Introduction During the first part of my journey, I was on the East Coast working as a freelance illustrator for a variety of applications, including children’s publishing. Eventually, we “switched coasts” and moved to Southern California, which turned out to be a bit of a culture shock. I ended up an art docent volunteer with the hope of giving elementary aged kids a foundation in art before they could decide that they weren’t “good at it”. This experience brought a satisfaction in sharing what I knew about the use of materials, the fundamentals of art, and the synthesis of information to uniquely express oneself. Gradually the focus of my time shifted from paint and brushes to fabric and batting. Quilting became my new form of artistic expression. I’m at the point now that I can see the themes and threads that pull these different experiences together. I don’t think of quilting as the last interest I’ll ever pursue, but one of many vehicles I've used to express myself. Maybe it’s just a stop before I get to the next phase in creative exploration and expression. Hence the title of this blog: Creative Life Sampler.
