| Introduction | The Atlantic Wildlife Institute (AWI), founded in 1996 as a nationally registered charitable not-for-profit corporation, began primarily as a centre for the rescue and rehabilitation of wildlife that had been displaced, distressed, injured or orphaned as a result of human encroachment on natural ecosystems. Over the years, the centre has handled close to 3,000 rescue and rehabilitation cases, representing more than 100 species of birds and mammals. In addition, staff members have provided consultation and advice in more than 20,000 wildlife emergency situations. At AWI, animal care is not our primary objective so much as an essential tool by which we can identify and highlight key issues for public attention and response. We believe that wildlife stewardship is best done in a holistic and systematic manner, addressing root causes and not just symptoms. Without donations from people like you we could not operate. If you are so inclined, you can contribute to this effort here: http://atlanticwildlife.ca/donate/ |
