Introduction Güldem's principle areas of research and teaching lie in the fields of economic geography, urban geography, and spatial planning. Her research concerns the development of cities and regions as political and economic phenomena, focusing particularly on the challenges of de-development and shrinkage and the role of state and policy in the governance of urban/regional economies. Her most recent research engages with political geographies of populism/authoritarianism/illiberalism. She has held various academic positions, teaching, and visiting appointments in Turkey, Italy, and the UK, and is currently based at the Centre for Urban and Regional Development Studies (CURDS), Newcastle University. She has been involved in international research projects funded by EU's COST and ERA-NET and European Commission's EuropeAid Turkey schemes.
