| Introduction | I am an essayist at large in the world. I have spent my life traveling between different countries, the United States, India and France, but also Japan, South Korea, England and Italy. I write books, long and short articles, opinion pieces. I try to tell the truth as I see it about a complicated world in deep crisis, teetering on the brink of environmental and social catastrophe, plagued by injustice and suffering beyond all reason. Yet, five decades into my life's journey, I still wonder at the beauty of a fine day, the joy on a child's face, the redemptive power of art, the delight in conversation with a kindred soul.
