Introduction I live in a treasury of music, unfortunately obstructed by numerous Scottish flags. It's not that I'm ashamed of them or anything; they just clash with the rest of the room. The flags can be attributed to my father, Ronan Blair, who immigrated from Scotland back in 1903. Don't ask him about it. He'll complain about how he got there a week before they installed the wooden benches. My mother, on the other hand, is responsible for all the music. She frequents the stage of the Cotton Club, the old Club Deluxe. Laverne Achebe -- ask about her, and people will probably know who she is. Ask them about me, and they'll know me, too. Well, the people on stage and backstage. Momma gets tons of music -- cylinders, records, old sheet music -- from the performers to give to me. I haven't been able to step out on the stage for the fear of being called a mutt by the audience. Sure, New York never banned any sort of interracial marriage, but you get audience members from loads of other states.
