IntroductionI was born with a green thumb. I started gardening when I was about 6 years old and never stopped! My first official patch of ground was dedicated to a field of lilies of the valleys. On hot summer days, I would lay on the shady ground and smell. My mother was an avid gardener, in and out of the vegetable patch, and I explored her books, helped her out, and got to do much of my own gardening at a very young age. I loved going to the greenhouse in winter with her and smelling that earthy, warm smell of soil, water, and happy plants. Since then, I've worked with children's gardens in a variety of contexts, including the Santa Fe Children's Museum and with Collective Roots in East Palo Alto, CA. I have also researched children's connections with nature and the benefits of gardening. This is my 5th year gardening with my son (now 5), and each year I've benefited from seeing what he gets out of the experience as well. I created this blog as a resource for anyone interested in gardening with children. It's a wonderful way to explore nature, share ideas, and PLAY!
