IntroductionLeaping to the forefront of my self-description is California. I'm a 5th generation Californian whose great-great-great grandfather bought land in Pennsylvania from William Penn and his son, my great-great grandfather came by wagon train to the lush foothills of the Yosemite Valley during the gold rush. In searching my father's genealogy I find men who served in the Revolutionary War, Mexican War, Civil War and World Wars I and II. I find my great-great grandmother who married at age fifteen and took the wagon train at 17. I find the first large landowner of Los Angeles County in the mid-1800's, Don Juan Rowland. I find people who strove against enormous odds, wrote journals, served in government, and found their way all around our country. I find myself now at this keyboard wondering what I add to their legacy and lineage. What were their dreams on that wagon train in 1852? Five generations later I wonder if my life, so far, has even brushed the edge of their wildest dreams.
