| Introduction | In 1983, a month before the day I was to be married to Meg, I was admitted to the hospital with terminal liver failure due to the genetic disorder Wilson's disease. I underwent 3 liver transplants at Presbyterian Hospital, Pittsburgh PA. Meg and I were married on June 9, 1985. We raised three children together. In 2011 my transplant began to fail as a result of undiagnosed Hep-C acquired from a blood transfusion. Thanksgiving of 2012 I underwent a 4th liver transplant at the Mayo Clinic, Jacksonville, FL. In 2013 I went into septic shock as a result of Hep-C treatment and was air-lifted in a coma from UNM hospital in Albuquerque, NM to Mayo in Jacksonville. In the spring of 2013 I made multiple trips from Albuquerque to John's Hopkins for an experimental treatment and was eventually cured of Hep-C. In 2014 I developed kidney failure due to years of immunosupressive drugs and went on dialysis. In the fall of 2015 I underwent a kidney transplant at UCSF by way of a 3-way trade that began with a kidney donation from Meg. Today I live with Meg and two English mastiffs in Albuquerque. I teach physics at UNM and Meg is a physician. |
