Introduction Once upon a time I imagined that one day I would retire and live in Europe. My dream was to spend a few chapters of my life wandering around the continent, walking through parks and museums, cathedrals and castles - soaking up the culture of the countries where my family tree first put down roots and started spreading its branches. But then I met my husband, John, and my dreams morphed into his and the fire that was my "European Adventure" settled down to a quiet, little pilot light, steadily burning in the back of my mind. My years-long research into my family history fueled that tiny flame into a strong desire to travel to the places where my “greats” once lived. Then a cousin in Germany, from a limb of my family tree that I never knew had sprouted branches, found me and we started corresponding. This added a bit more fuel to that ever-growing flame. As the birthdays piled up, I knew that if I didn’t do it soon, I never would. Our magic travel pass (otherwise known as our U.S. passports) allow us to stay in Germany for 90 days without a visa. It was a good place to start. Thank you, John, for indulging my dream and joining me for a journey back to the future.
