| Introduction | I'm a drummer, a lawyer, a hiker, a dog owner, a left-ish political junkie, a dad, a husband, a lot of things. But this blog is about music. If you "know" me online, it may be from my previous ten years of blogging at thepaleodrummer.com. That was then; this is now. Friends have told me for a while to put my music blahblahblah in one place. Here it is. Dig in. Or not. Your call. I saw my first concert in 1977. I probably saw my most recent one last week, or maybe yesterday, or maybe two weeks ago. Probably not any longer than that. Albums are great. Live shows are better. As a drummer I can tell you that the live performance -- where the band members are listening to one another, and responding in turn -- is the holy grail of music appreciation, for the audience and the players onstage. I've seen a lot of shows. Much of this blog is going to be fueled by memories of those many concerts. Many of those shows will have been what can broadly be described as "punk" or "alternative." But not all. Like Mike Watt said, "Punk is whatever we made it to be." And let's not get pigeonholed into just "punk"; there's always room for Levon Helm. Come back often. Leave a comment or two. |
