| Introduction | With apologies to Sir Richard Eyre: "I'm not steeped in theatre lore and I'm not sure I like theatre enough to act as its propagandist and evangelist. I don't love it. It can be inert and dispiriting, and clubby, self-regarding, tacky and embarrassing. You can sometimes be ashamed of being in the audience on those occasions, let alone in the same profession as the people on the stage, let alone part of the human race. But when it's good?
