| Introduction | According to the Muskogee Creek beliefs that I follow, there are four stages of life: infancy, youth, maturity and old age. During my infancy, I grew up in a Chicago suburb, Arlington Heights. Fortunately, a small prairie had survived across the street where I could touch and feel the power of Mother Earth. I often yearned to feel a connection with Native American people and to explore vast tracts of wilderness. During my youth, I followed part of that yearning by embarking on a 2,000-mile journey on the Appalachian Trail, whereupon a vision offered me a direction and purpose in my life. Since that time, I became involved with the ecology movement and with a gifted Muskogee teacher by the name of Bear Heart. I describe some of my experiences with Bear Heart in my book, The Vision Keepers. Perhaps I began to move more into the maturity phase of my life when, following another vision, I organized a 3800-mile walk across the United States from coast to coast, followed by a walk through Europe and through the southeastern United States. This is the focus of my new book, The Vision Keepers: Walking for Native Americans and the Earth. |
