| Introduction | Neal Smead worked for his family's printing company before joining FedEx. He helped double the company's turnover while on the payroll by supervising a small sales crew. After handing over the reins to his younger brother, the company continues to thrive, with Smead remaining involved on an informal consulting basis. As a University of Texas at Austin student, the eager, self-taught cook worked in a variety of hotel and restaurant kitchens throughout the city and Travis County. Neal Smead began as a kitchen porter and worked his way up to sous chef under the executive chef at one of the city's most popular independent restaurants. After graduation, Neal Smead worked as a junior sales representative for a now-defunct nonprofit organization. The charity, based in Dallas, Texas, raised funds for pediatric cancer research and other life-threatening illnesses. |
