About me

LocationCrumpsall, Manchester, United Kingdom
IntroductionIt's been 25yrs since the Cleveland Folk club opened it's doors, initially, it was formed out of the need to expand the sing-around which had grown in the Egerton in Crumpsall. As they had no function room, it was decided by Ian Sproson and the late Tony Hill that the Cleveland Hotel was the next choice. The major contributors at that time were Ian Sproson, Tony Hill, Steve Wooley, Mark O'Niell, Mike Bowden, the late Paul Baker. The folk club started late September, early October, 1985 with Peter Adamus acting as master of ceremonies. In November 1985, Lorna Egan took over as Mistress of Ceremonies. The club slowly grew from local singers, Ian and Tony, to up and coming local talent, many of whom went on to further a career in music in their own right. The club was not just an outlet for music and singers, other mediums were also popular, from Manchesters own Lemm Sessay to unuque humour of award winning Henry Normal, not forgetting 'The world smallest touring panto' from Buntin and Frolicks! The club was also well known for organising numerous charity events . The Cleveland Folk club unfortunately ended in March 1994.
