Introduction | I grew up in Newport, RI USA My father Maurice Ginsburg was a 1921 immigrant from the area of Dokshitz, now in Belarus. His father Israel Ginsburg was one of seven siblings. One went to Cuba, one to New York City, and four remained in the old country. More than 40 were killed in the Holocaust, mostly in Parfianavo, which is near Dokshitz. His mrther Dvorshe Kusinitz was one of four siblings who settled in Newport. Two other siblings died in the Holocaust. My mother Dorothy Pokross was from Fall River, Massachusetts. Her father Jacob Pokross was from Gorodishche, Ukraine (near Cherkassy) Her mother Sarah Karnovsky was from Ignatovka, which is 13 miles from Kiev in The Ukraine. I helped the local officials restore the Jewish Cemetery in Dokshitz. I have been able to reunite several families that were seperated by time, distance and the Holocaust. I am a free lance reporter for the Boston Jewish Advocate, have a blog about Jewish Newport, and have spoken about my adventures in family history, genealogy, and travel. I welcome speaker opportunites. |
