| Introduction | I've been having a love affair with nature for over 30 years with sketches and paintings to prove it. By working directly with my subject I form an emotional bond, eager to have a conversation and learn its secrets before I even pick up a pencil or brush. If I'm lucky, I'll discover its underwear of cuts, scars and bruises making it all the more inspiring. Using all my senses I try to express things like the feeling of green on a spring morning, the evocative fragrance of honeysuckle, dancing wind across the top of pond water and birdsong weaving through the grasses along a creek. My paper becomes infused with the location from using the local water, applying a smudge of soil to the paper, a rubbing of a leaf and the very air itself merging with the paint.
