| Introduction | One of the greatest challenges confronting contemporary Christianity is the widespread lack of the skills required to interpret Scripture through sound biblical hermeneutics and careful exegesis. To understand what a biblical passage truly means, it must be interpreted historically, grammatically, and contextually. Whenever you read a passage of Scripture, you should ask: What did the author originally intend to communicate? What message was the author conveying? What would the passage have meant to its original audience? What is the immediate and broader context? What do the key words mean, and how were they used in the original language? Sadly, many Christians are never taught how to study the Bible in this way. Consequently, they lift verses out of context, impose their own ideas upon the text, and apply passages in ways the biblical authors never intended. If you desire to grow in your faith and deepen your understanding of Scripture, you must commit yourself to the disciplined study of God’s Word: “Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who has no need to be ashamed, rightly handling the word of truth.” —2 Timothy 2:15 |
