About me

IntroductionWelcome to the Christoph family's virtual connection with home during our Zanzibar Year! This blog reflects our personal views only and not the views of the Fulbright Program or the U.S. Department of State.

Zanzibar is an archipelago in the Indian Ocean, just south of the equator, and it has been part of the country of Tanzania since 1964. Zanzibar has a long history as a trading post between Africa and the Arab world. It is now a place of great contrast, between the lush beauty of its beaches and tourist hotels, and the poverty of many of its citizens.

In Zanzibar, our family is in some ways doing what we normally do. Julie, usually a professor at the University of Puget Sound, is on a Fulbright, teaching at the State University of Zanzibar and doing research into non-formal adult literacy programs. Brady, usually an elementary teacher, is volunteering through International CATALYST Fund at a tutoring center in Zanzibar. Our kids, usually elementary students, are attending school with kids from Zanzibar and from all over the world. We’re excited to see how our usual roles are evolving (and not) in our new setting. We hope you’ll visit us here often.
