| Introduction | For the past thirteen years I have been working as a professional educator, primarily as a high school public speaking, drama, musical-theatre, and English teacher, and also as a junior-college adjunct instructor in public speaking. In 1986 I obtained my B.A. in theatre/speech education from Western Illinois University. For the subsequent seven years I was a member of a religious community, studying to be a Catholic priest while earning my Master's of Divinity from Catholic Theological Union in Chicago. In 1999 a job at a local high school provided an opportunity. I taught at that school for twelve years. Then in 2010, I was one of 17,000 teachers in Illinois who lost a job because of the state's budget crunch. Thank goodness a teaching job opened up at a private Catholic school in my hometown. The only problem was that the position was advertised as teaching English, a subject I hadn't taught in eleven years. But I applied, and to my surprise, I got the job. It's been a love affair ever since. |
