| Introduction | I am a Welsh woman who has ended up working as a human rights lawyer in Cairo. I work at an Egyptian NGO called the Egyptian Initiative for Personal Rights (EIPR). We do amazing work related to freedom of expression/ violence against women/ religious freedom/ the right to privacy... I'm also doing some work for AMERA, a fantastic refugee legal aid group in Cairo. In my previous life, I completed a Ph.D. in English at Oxford University. I taught literature at universities in the UK and US before deciding that I couldn't cope with the closeted world of academia. So now I've happily escaped the academic ivory towers and am immersed in the craziness of Cairo! As the description of my blog suggests, I believe that human rights, personal story-telling, politics, art and literature are--or should be--all integrally linked. By telling stories about ourselves and listening to those of others we can gradually learn to respect the rights of unfamiliar people and develop an international politic that is based on human solidarity. I don't have a clear idea how these narratives can be successfully fused. But I'm exploring and considering the options... |
