Introduction Some eight years ago I began charting the family tree that I hoped would add a little structure and insight into the world in which we find ourselves. In 2012 such activity was becoming mainstream: no doubt a function of prompts and promotion by the various digital organisations providing access to the relevant genealogical records. Add to the mix retirement looming on the horizon combined with something of an identity crisis in the form of a stuttering, at times unfathomable relationship. Maybe this research was a diversion or perhaps yet another attempt to chart, relate to and make sense of the of the more confusing times in life's journey. Discovering the highs, lows and challenges of those who have gone before provides its own strange form of consolation.
