Introduction	My grandma was a junker, and my mom and her brothers were the recipients of whatever she could scavenge in Brooklyn's secondhand shops. So I come by it honestly, although it skipped a generation with my mom, who has a horror of "used stuff." My philosophy on junking is pretty simple: 1. Must not cost much (that rules out pricey antique stores for most trips.) 2. Must be pretty and functional / useful. 3. Must speak to me on some level and be worthy of sitting in my home for a while. Can't just buy it because it's a steal! 4. Should be unique, well-made and require minimal - if any - repairs. My strategy is pretty simple. I hit estate sales, garage sales and thrift shops in promising parts of town.
