Introduction One of my favorite stories was written by the late Henri Nouwen. He shares in his published journal about the experience of going apple picking with a group of disabled adults. Initially his focus was on picking the apples, getting them in the bucket and bringing them home. He quickly noticed, however, that the trip was less about a job to be done and more about an experience to be shared. As a working mother of four, I too lose sight of what’s really important. In my desperate longing to flee piles of dirty laundry and sibling squabbles, I can so easily value efficiency over the beauty of present moments. Nouwen’s words “slow together is better than fast alone” have become a daily mantra for me as I seek to settle in to the messiness of everyday life for the joy of doing it together.
