Introduction Richard Shields treats his practice as a residency in his own life, exploring a duality between the valuable permanence found in drawing and mark making, and the disposability of everyday encounters. Using traditional skills, performance, found objects and the site specific, Shields looks to history both as an indicator and to contextualize his finances, and his eyesight.
Interests Shields graduated From Manchester Metropolitan University with a BA hons in Sculpture in 2006. In 2004 Shields co-founded and directed the artists led group 'Contents May Vary' who specialise in site specific shows in alternative spaces. The use of the site specific strongly influenced Shields studio practice, leading him to produce solo projects about his eyesight following cataract operations from 2014-16 called 'Sight Specific' and another project dealing with his debt and arts funding called 'The Journey Of The Artist And The Price Of The Ticket' in 2013. Recent exhibitions include a site specific commission for the Mdina Cathedral Biennale 2015 and a lecture and workshop for Cittadellearte in Biella Italy. The workshop taught artists from Milan and Rome how to use their practice as a commodity for trade with other professionals. He is currently developing new work relating to his ongoing eyesight issues and exploring connections between current financial and artistic process and Renaissance banking and coeval arts patronage.
