Sponges and tongues are frequently misspelled. Is it because both are thirsty?

Tongue I understand the mispelling of. But sponge? Decode it with me: sp-on-ge. Are folks dropping the silent 'e'? mistaking the 'g' g sound for a j...? :/ I don't get it.
