IntroductionIn my ministry as a United Methodist bishop, I encourage people to base their lives on Great Commandment and the Great Commission: to love God with their whole selves, to practice daily spiritual disciplines, and to share God's love with others. I believe this will help make United Methodists spiritually vital people who make a difference in their communities and the world. I also encourage people to take up disciplines of nutrition and exercise. (I run every day for my physical and spiritual well-being.) I was ordained as a United Methodist clergywoman in 1981, was consecrated a bishop in 2004, and was sent that year to lead the Minnesota Area of the United Methodist Church. I received my theological education from Boston University School of Theology, the University of Geneva/World Council of Churches, and United Theological Seminary, Dayton, Ohio (1989). I value the teaching of our United Methodist heritage that personal piety (personal holiness) is inextricably woven to peace and justice advocacy (social holiness). My husband, the Rev. Ken Ehrman, and I have traveled the globe together by plane, bicycle, and on foot.
