IntroductionI grew up three streets above a steel mill in Braddock, Pa. We lived only a few blocks from the Monongahela River, but it was such a filthy, polluted place that nobody-including me- ever went there. I always knew I would leave, but where, I had no idea. Eventually I found my way to Colorado and then to Portland, Oregon. Along the way I realized I was really a river kind of gal and became an avid sea kayak paddler. I'm one of the founders of the Oregon Ocean Paddling Society and the Sauvie Island Conservancy. I moved to the island in 1988 and lived in a house surrounded by forest. Last year I downsized and moved 1/4 mile down the road to a riverhouse-a small floating home on the Multnomah Channel of the Willamette River. When I said that's what I was going to do, friends exclaimed, "That is so perfect for you!" and "You are going to love it there!" I do-more than I could have imagined, since I loved the forest house. Because I'm a professional writer who likes to journal, I found that I seemed to have never-ending notes of riverhouse stories to tell. Thus, this blog. The photo is the river girl celebrating her 60th birthday with a two-week raft trip through the Grand Canyon.
