Introduction	I've been involved in education for a really long time...in fact, like most teachers, I have spent almost my whole life in one school or another. Fortunately, there has been a lot of variety and none of the schools of my adult life have been what you would call typical. From northern Canada to Africa, from rural Nova Scotia to the middle of a university campus, the elementary schools I have taught in have been as varied as their locales. But my last school, and the one I am most attached to, having been there over 20 years, and watching it grow and develop, is unique. It is a small, private, progressive, child-centred, theme-based school that has somehow survived decades of pushes towards standardization, back-to-basics and accountability in the wider world. H. I. S. has resisted, grown and thrived. Today it continues to educate children who above all have a love of learning, a sense of their own innate capacities and the creativity to tackle whatever life offers them.
