| Introduction | My hair has been locked about 4 years for the second time. I had dreads from 1995 to 2001. When the "911" event occurred I was let go from my job. Trying to get back on my feet,taking interview after interview with my dreads,no one would hire me as a computer engineer. When I would meet a potential employer for the first time I knew before the interview that I was qualified, but wouldn't get the position because of stero-types about locked/dreaded hair. After 10 months of trying, I decided to cut all of my dreads and perm my hair,to see if I would get a job in my choosen profession. Guess what, I got the first job after perming my hair. I wore my hair permed for one year to prove myself worthy. But, I stoppped growing spirtually, intellectually and physically. I went through depression and self loathing because I lost self when I permed my hair. I died and rotted from the inside out. I grew my locks and thus my happy, joyous and free journey prevailed again. Never again, will I allow you or society disconnect me from Mother Earth again, Never! |
