IntroductionOur 48-acre Nature Retreat (named Eartheart Center) encompasses cascading waterfalls, a white pine plantation, a hybrid chestnut restoration project, poplar and mixed oak woodlands, hillsides of mountain laurel and rhododendron, and a number of rock outcroppings. Our land is very near Great Smoky Mountains National Park, and it borders the Cherokee Indian Reservation. It includes a working homestead with organic gardens, pasture land, beehives, and a blueberry and fruit orchard. Living here at the Carolina homestead there is an assortment of colorful chickens; some lovable Nubian nanny goats; a barnyard cat and about one quarter of a million honeybees. These wonderful creatures are gracious enough to share their space with us humans: Caroline, her son Tristan who has decided to go by his long standing nickname "Tree," and Dusk, who moved here from North Georgia. We enjoy a small but esthetically pleasing, energy efficient, passive solar, earth-bermed home that Caroline designed and built herself. The home lies within an alternative intentional community named Union Acres, which Caroline co-founded over 20 years ago.
